Yes. You can make a living buying and selling websites. Its sounds cool right? Buying a website for pennies and flipping it for a tidy profit. It may sound like a nifty idea but if you really want to go into the at of buying and selling websites, you need to knwo a thing or thing about the intricacies of this industry.
Buying and selling websites is no different than buying and selling businesses. A business that can rake in the profits, month in and month out and with increasing profit margins is definitely an easy business to buy into. You wouldn’t want to buy a money losing business and one that has gotten itself into all sorts of problems that might just get you scrambling for a business dictionary just to understand the whole drama.
So, what kind of sites would you be looking for for a good flipping deal?
These are some of the characteristics that you might wanna look out for when buying a website:
1. The website has matured for sometime - A site that has been around for quite some time, maybe at least for 6 months to a year.
2. The website that you are looking to buy has high unique views and unique visits per month.
3. The website that you are looking to buy has content that is hard to find and is unique in its own way.
4. The website that you are looking to buy has a monetisation model that generates a monthly income.
5. The website that you are looking to buy has a sizable pagerank.
The list can go on but the above are some of the things that you can look out for when buying websites.
What then do website traders do when they have bought these sites?
Like buying a property, website buyers or website flippers if you would like to call them such, “improve” on their property. Some improve the design of these sites. Some add more functionalities. Some go to the extent of redesigning the whole site and bringing it up to a whole new level altogether.
It would be much easier to sell a site if you could actually prove how much the site has earned over the last 6 months or so. Any statistic that can add up the value of the site can be given to prospective buyers.
Two sites that I recommend that would allow you to buy and sell websites are; SitePoint and DigitalPoint.
You might wanna check the forums before doing any transaction.
Cheers!
